About 242 million tonnes of industrial wastes are produced annually in the EEC. The potential energy savings by direct incineration of these wastes has been estimated at 16.4 MTOE per year. In the projects of the Energy Demonstration programme considered here, the major opportunities for energy production by waste incineration are identified as being with commercial waste (paper, cartons, etc.), waste oils and shredder waste. Specific incinerator designs have to be developed for each type of waste, although fluidised bed furnaces have become increasingly popular in recent years. In almost all cases, the energy produced by the incineration of waste is used to raise steam, for process or district heating or for the production of electricity.
