Abstract

In quality assurance, flat surface embodiments are among the basic forms. Surface plates made of stone or steel are very important flat surface embodiments found in every major workshop and wherever precision measurements are performed, in the field of dimensional metrology. In coordinate measuring machines, surface embodiments are used to construct precise guides. The determination of flatness deviation is therefore a very important basic task of length metrology. Harmonisation of flatness measuring techniques is a prerequisite for quality assurance in joint projects carried out at the international level. With a view to harmonising the techniques applied to measure the flatness of large surface embodiments, the Commission organised an intercomparison of measurements carried out on a surface plate installed in an air-conditioned measurement laboratory at the PTB. 13 European laboratories, both metrological and industrial, took part in the intercomparison. The report describes the necessary preparations and the measurements proper, and indicates the results obtained.
