Abstract

A slag heaping system using a purpose-built compact modular loader machine is studied and analysed to demonstrate its advantages in solving the problems of slag heaping. The paper proposes the construction of a dike to contain larger slag heaps, using granular materials from the mine. Such a dike solves problems of drainage, diminishes the amount of water collected, has a self-cleansing effect on those waters, increases the capacity of the heap, reduces its environmental impact and allows savings in the use of machinery. For the construction of the dike a compact modular loader machine has been developed which can operate on wet and medium soft soils and on slopes of up to 10%. Its three modules make transportation, installation, maintenance and mobility easier, as well as facilitating its handling. It offers improved relative speed, design, stability and reliability over the conventional machine. Savings are also achieved through lower costs and greater productivity.
