  • Space and time series data analysis in coastal benthic ecology : An analytical exercise organised within the framework of the COST 647 project on coastal benthic ecology

The specific objectives of COST 647 relate to the accurate evaluation of biological changes in the marine environment. It therefore aims to generate an understanding of community dynamics, to allow prediction of the wider consequences of dramatic changes in the abundance of individual species as a result of natural factors or selective pollutants, and to identify key species if they exist. It also aims to develop an appreciation of the specific causes of biological change, particularly with regard to changes in natural conditions. Finally the programme aims to investigate spatial and temporal scales of natural variability over as long a time frame as possible. Four benthic habitats/communities were originally selected for collaborative study, around the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Some Mediterranean work, and a new study focusing on the Posidonia community, were later added. This volume presents an updated report of the proceedings of the symposium held in Crete in 1988 and specific papers concerning the Posidonia project from the same symposium.
