Recent results of high pressure X-ray diffraction studies of lanthanide and actinide metals and compounds are reviewed and compared. Updated versions of the general diagrams of the phase relations of lanthanide and actinide metals under pressure are presented, including a recent study in the range above 100 GPa (1 Mbar). The diagrams also include a few pressure studies of binary alloys between neighbouring elements. For the B1 type compounds, some systematic trends in the transition pressures, the nature of the high-pressure phases and the compressibility have been revealed by recent studies, in particular for the actinide compounds.
