The aim of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using AVHRR data to characterise the spatio-temporal structure and the scale of the spatial variability of a ground scene. 48 AVHRR images for three dry and two wet seasons over southern Mali have been acquired and preprocessed to form a multi-temporal data set of temperature, albedo and NDVI measurements, including a cloud mask for each image. The analysis of the data set includes the characterisation of the temporal development of the mean values and semi-variances of the calculated parameters, as well as the analysis of the mean local variance for different resolution cell sizes simulated from high resolution imagery. The results show that semi- variograms can be used effectively for the characterisation of different scales of spatial variability and their temporal development. Further research, however, is required for the development of a semi-automatic interpretation algorithm in order to be able to treat large data sets efficiently.
