A feasibility study on the automatic updating of the CORINE land cover database using satellite imagery in Portugal
This paper describes a study undertaken by the Joint Research Centre of the EC on the possibility of updating the CORINE land cover maps by automatic or semi-automatic procedures based on satellite remote sensing. In order to evaluate such a possibility a study has been undertaken on the detectability of classes in the standard CORINE land cover nomenclature. An investigation has also been carried out by means of field experiments in Portugal, on the potential reproducibility of the original maps from a statistical point of view by automatic methods. This study has revealed some of the inherent and unavoidable subjectivities in the original maps which impose constraints on possible updating methodologies.
