EC intercomparison of VOC measurements
An intercomparison exercise on the measurement of hydrocarbons in ambient air has been organised, in preparation for future regulation of photo-oxidants and the harmonisation of VOC measurements in Europe. The stability of acetylene and the heavier components (C6 to C9) was shown to be poor, throwing doubt on the use of standard gas cylinders for these components. Gas mixtures of more volatile compounds (C2 to C6) presented a good stability. Reproducibility between laboratories was poor (31%), as was the accuracy of determination of individual components compared to the gravimetric standard. Systematic errors were attributed to the variety of sampling and analytical techniques, as well as the calibration procedures.
