Abstract

The thermochemistry of some indenyl compounds of ytterbium, thorium and uranium has been examined by batch-titration solution calorimetry. The bond disruption enthalpies, in kJ/mol, of (C(9)H(7))(3)U-L, obtained in toluene solution by iodinolysis are: 196.3 +/- 6.6, 266.8 +/- 3.2 and 71.3 +/- 5.2 for L = CH(3), I and THF, respectively. These values are compared with the results of the alcoholysis with 2.2.2-trifluoro-ethanol, D(An-R), in kJ/mol, (C(9)H(7))(3)Th-CH(2)Si(CH(3))(3), 397 +/- 7, (C(9)H(7))(3)Th-CH(3), 371 +/- 6, (1-C(2)H(5)-C(9)H(6))(3)Th-CH(3), 365 +/-5, (C(9)H(7))(3)Th-CH(CH(3))(2), 357 +/- 8, (C(9)H(7))(3)U-CH(3), 351 +/- 2, (1-C(2)H(5)-C(9)H(6))(3)-U-CH(3), 350 +/- 4 and (C(9)H(7))(3)Th-CH(2)C(6)H(5), 342 +/- 9. The problem of the existing values for D (U-O) is discussed. (Yb-I) bond disruption enthalpies in a number of compounds have also been obtained by iodinolysis in toluene. In addition, the preparation and preliminary thermochemical studies of new indenyl derivatives are reported.
