Management of tritiated wastes in ETHEL
The European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory (ETHEL) is a new tritium facility at the JRC Ispra. The laboratory is to start radioactive operations in early 1993. The general operation and maintenance of ETHEL systems and experiments will generate tritiated wastes in gaseous, liquid and solid forms. The management of such wastes under safe working conditions is a stringent laboratory requirement, to minimise tritium releases to the environment. This paper describes established operational criteria and conditioning procedures to be applied in ETHEL as well as the main handling facilities installed in it for implementing the safe management of tritiated wastes.
