A standardised approach to calculating potential evapotranspiration throughout the European CommunityFunded under: JRC-SERV 3C
A reference formula was identified for calculating potential evapotranspiration (PET) on a ten-year time scale throughout the European Community. For calculating this ten-year PET solely from thermometric data, a simplified formula was chosen, which can be used in systems to forecast European crop yields or to give early warning of climatic anomalies affecting agriculture - such as drought. The work was carried out in three stages: - identification of the best available reference formula, by means of tests comparing results to several series of measurements of maximum PET from turf; - analysis of long series of data on estimated ten-year PET from 33 stations throughout the EC; - selection of a simplified formula with results most closely mirroring the above long data series, and thus least at variance with estimates obtained using the reference formula.
