Institute for Prospective Technological Studies : Annual report 1991Funded under: JRC-RES 5C
The primary tasks of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (PROMPT) are monitoring new developments in science and technology and strategic analyses of new areas of science and technology. This report documents PROMPT's activities in 1991, including: i) progress achieved in both the development of ESTO and the pilot version of NOVA DB (which identifies and evaluates technical innovations in key research areas). The QUIQOD, or Q(2), database (an inventory of "who is doing what" in European science and technology) was also developed, and the Institute ran two successful trials to collect scientific intelligence from Japan and the USA; ii) six studies broadly related to global warming were undertaken for the Forward Studies Unit of the Presidency and two others were carried out for the Directorate General for Industry; one on the future European high speed rail system and the other on the competitiveness of the European space industry; iii) one sizeable external contract on the future uses of cork; iv) intramural studies carried out by visiting scientific researchers; v) three Institute workshops; the first dealt with innovation indicators, the second, aimed at the establishment of a European network, concerned training in strategic prospective, and the third reviewed the preliminary findings from the high speed train study.
