Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Directive 76/160/EEC introduced procedures for monitoring the quality of bathing water in order to protect public health and safeguard the quality of the environment. It also called on the Commission to publish a report summarising the data submitted by the member states. This report contains, for each member state in 1991: i) an overall summary of the information obtained from the monitoring programme for 1990 and 1991; ii) a map showing the microbiological quality of the bathing water in each district during the 1991 bathing season, based on the mandatory values set for total and faecal coliforms. The results show that there is a large disparity with regard to the evolution of bathing water quality throughout the Community.
