Neutron radiography inspection of relays for satellite and space technology applications
An investigation of the application of neutron radiography to space components technology was undertaken using the neutron radiography facility of the High Flux Reactor at Petten. One of the applications where neutron radiography inspection provides unique and important additional information on the status of internal construction is in relation to electric relays as employed in satellites and spacecraft. Neutron radiography, in particular, reveals structural details and functional features not detectable by X-ray inspection. It is also suited to conductors plated with gold, contacts and bearings of various types of relays (eg. glass beads), and to detecting contaminants such as fibres, isolation materials and other hydrogen-containing debris. This paper includes some examples of neutron radiography of relays and highlights the results of the investigation.
