This paper investigates major accidental events occurring at football matches this century. Publically available information is mostly limited to newspaper reports and occasional official reports. There is often a lack of basic statistical information. It was found possible to identify and verify 31 events, in 22 countries. Frequency-fatality and frequency-injury curves are drawn. Analysis indicates two major types of event, one where the predominant contributing factor is violent behaviour in the crowd, and the other where the main cause is fire or structural failure, with confinement being an additional problem.
