Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The European Commission has expressed concern and responsibility for environmental protection in Community policies and programmes. Central to Community environmental action, however, is the need for reliable and accessible information about the location and status of vulnerable ecosystems, habitats and species. The aim of the CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) biotopes project, which was initiated in 1985, was to identify and describe biotopes of major importance for nature conservation in the Community. This publication comes in two parts, the first of which comprises three volumes: one describing the methodology and the others giving the data specifications. The second part contains a report on the project together with the relevant maps that have been produced.
