  • The quantitative determination of PCDD and PCDF : Improvement of the analytical quality up to a level acceptable for the certification of certified reference materials

This report gives an account of the systematic and collaborative learning programme, undertaken by a group of experienced analytical laboratories within the European Community to improve the state of the art in the determination of individual polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzo furanes in fly ash. The improvements made were incorporated into the analytical methods used for the subsequent certification exercise to produce one fly ash extract as a certified reference material (CRM). The report gives details of the choice of individual isomers and the critical GC and MS parameters necessary to optimise and maintain the desired chromatographic separation and quantification of each isomer. An assessment is made of the methods of extraction, separation and clean-up of samples prior to gas chromatographic analysis.
