Adequate sizing of the pressure relief system of a batch reactor under runaway reaction requires knowledge of the heat of reaction and of the main features of the fluid flow in the venting duct (possibility of occurrence of two-phase flow and associated flow regimes). In this report the following topics are addressed: the fundamental aspects of two-phase flows with distributed heat sources, the calorimetric techniques adopted to reproduce, at small scale, the behaviour of materials in the real reactor, and the methods and computer codes used to obtain safe but not over-conservative vent sizing.
