Ocean measurements taken using the time-resolved Lidar fluorosensor of the JRC, operating from the Agusta AB 412 helicopter
Interest in Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) technology for the teledetection and monitoring of water and air pollution is growing. The possibility of carrying out environmental surveys using units installed in helicopters, which can operate in critical conditions and with low levels of logistical support, and of taking measurements during stationary flight (hovering), means that Lidar is now a powerful instrument of environmental protection. Agusta Sistemi in Tradate (Varese, Italy) and the Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Varese, Italy) are successfully using a time resolved Lidar fluorosensor (TRLF) installed on an Agusta AB412 helicopter for the characterisation of oil on the water's surface and to determine water column parameters.
