The innovative potential of biotechnology is underlined, and some of the applications in the areas of health, agriculture and food are summarised. Some of the reasons that led the EC to launch R&D programmes on biotechnology are described briefly , followed by outlines of BEP, BAP and BRIDGE programmes. The nature and the organisation of `N' and `T' projects are reviewed, as well as different possibilities for industrial participation - direct participation in the project, association with ELWWs or with industrial platforms. Finally, the scientific scope and the implementation of the Biotechnology programme in the Third Framework Programme are summarised.
