The presence of non-metallic inclusions in steels and nickel alloys may create leak-paths under ultra high vacuum conditions. This paper shows the application of the ASTM E45 standard to the assessment of these inclusions and gives some design recommendations. Three case histories encountered at JET and a possible explanation of the phenomenon are also presented.
