During the last 25 years xylene has been a major component of, amongst other things, most solvent-based paints manufactured in Sweden and accordingly, both painters and workers in the paint industry have been exposed to this solvent. This publication contains a criteria document for the establishment of an occupational exposure limit value for xylene. Data were collected on xylene chemistry, production, occurrence in the workplace and toxicology; existing occupational exposure limits were evaluated. All data were interpreted with respect to human health risk and occupational exposure, and are summarised at the end of the report.
