COST 305 - Present and future demand in European passenger transport - data availability, collection and standardisation - recommendations of COST Action 305
Project ID: 305Funded under: IC-COST
The subject of this seminar, research project COST 305, was undertaken jointly by seven European countries (Federal Republic of Germany, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland) along with the Community, as part of the COST Action, between 1984 and 1987. Whilst the results of this study only partly cover the subject under investigation, they reinforce the view that effective transport planning in Europe will be impeded unless there is improvement in the content and scope of the statistical and survey data currently gathered. As traditional regional and national barriers to travel are lifted, a new general database is needed, and data collection and surveying must be standardised. The project has produced recommendations for a set of readily constructible statistics, as well as initial guidelines on the frequency of data collection and on costs. The seminar was held to enable participating experts, transport operators and users, statisticians, and national administrations to discuss the study's recommendations, and to find ways of enhancing transport data, as well as to contribute towards creating data bases for wider use on matters of general interest.
