Abstract

This handbook represents an important strand in the CEC's programme to promote the design and construction of energy-efficient, passive solar buildings in Europe. The enlargement of the Community with the accession of Greece, Portugal and Spain, together with progress in research, has resulted in a new balance of emphasis on building design for northern and southern European climates compared with that in previous editions of this handbook. Topics covered include: (i) the principles of climatic design; (ii) passive solar heating; (iii) natural cooling; (iv) the optimal use of available daylight; (v) an overview of the factors to be considered in providing conditions of thermal and visual comfort for building occupants.
