Abstract

One of the aims of the BRITE-EURAM programme is to evaluate the effects of damage and defects on the mechanical behaviour of composite aeronautical parts. This paper describes a nondestructive method of assessing impact damage on polymeric composite materials. The method uses an immersion ultrasonic technique and has been applied on real composite parts during the certification tests of the civil version of the AGUSTA-Westland helicopter EH 101. The method was developed using graphite-epoxy composites in laminate and in sandwich forms. The damage induced by impact on test specimens ranged from the barely visible to scrap of the structure. It was possible to evaluate the damage with the required definition and resolution using this technique.
