Large amounts of toxic industrial wastes are produced in certain regions of the European Community. Research at the JRC has produced a prototype decision support system for the management of industrial wastes, which can be customised for individual users. The system is based on three categories of data: geographical data, data referring to the production of industrial waste and data concerning the location of existing or planned waste disposal and treatment facilities. The problem is first analysed by the scenario generation module, as a classical operational research localisation problem. The scenario evaluation module evaluates the cost, environmental impact, transportation risk and severe accident probability associated with each scenario. The final module is the multicriterion decision module.
