Abstract

Two different numerical approaches modelling the mutual field-structure interactions during transient electromagnetic phenomena are presented. The first approach considers a 1D situation for both the electromagnetic and mechanical part, while the second one, based on a Lagrangian formulation, involves a 3D finite element computation from the electromagnetic point of view, coupled with a modal analysis. The application of these approaches to simple plate models, simulating flexible conducting components of fusion devices, shows that a magnetic damping is encountered. This damping, present in both bending and torsional modes, increases with the applied magnetic field, modifying the mechanical behaviour.
