Heading of conventional circular stone drifts
To ensure success of conventional heading through rock, five conditions must be met simultaneously. It is necessary: i) to use advanced technical means, such as the electrohydraulic equipment now available; ii) to achieve a high degree of motivation on the part of the workforce; iii) to aim for a shift cycle; iv) to ensure very accurate planning of work at and behind the face; v) to ensure thorough maintenance of equipment. These conclusions were reached after analysing the organisation of circular stone drifts occurring in the cycle, after developing forecasting software and fulfilling all the above five conditions on site. There is scope for further improvement in continuous loading, in automation of excavation, and in support and lagging.
