Abstract

The Maxwellian-averaged (n,gamma) cross-section of 138Ba, with magic neutron number 82, is crucial in determining the average neutron exposure tau(0) of the s-process. Therefore, high resolution neutron capture measurements of 138Ba were carried out at GELINA in the energy range 0.5 - 103 keV. A total of 54 neutron resonances were resolved and analysed in order to derive their capture areas gGamma(n)Gamma(gamma)/Gamma. From these values the Maxwellian-averaged (n,gamma) cross-section was calculated as a function of temperature kT from 10 to 50 keV. Compared to previous data, the present data show a steeper rise with decreasing kT. This indicates that for the 13C(alpha,n) reaction an exposure which is about 30% smaller is sufficient for describing the solar abundances.
