Abstract

Theorists are now in a position to understand, from first principles, how the magnetic moments are distributed among the various sites in complicated itinerant systems. In the AnFE(2) compounds (An = Th-Pu) both the actinide and the ligand (Fe) have a magnetic moment. However, in the early part of the series it is Fe that makes the system magnetic whereas in the later part it is the 5f states that spinpolarise spontaneously. A simple physical picture is presented in this paper, in terms of which the magnitude and trend in magnetic moments throughout the series may be understood.
