Preparation and structure of new ternary intermetallic compounds of actinides
Ternary compounds of actinides are the subject of intense research in the field of magnetism, heavy fermions and superconductivity. This paper presents recent contributions to this research, dealing with the preparation and characterisation of some new intermetallic compounds: PuRhAl, PuIrAl, U(2)Ni(2)In, U(2)Rh(2)In, U(2)Ni(2)Zn, NpPd(2)Al(3) and PuPd(2)Al(3). The samples were prepared by arc melting, and the compounds characterised by X-ray diffraction, metallography, DTA and dilatometry. Mechanical fragmentation was employed to isolate small crystals suitable for X-ray analysis from the cooled melt. The lattice parameters and the reflection intensities were measured using a CAD-4 Enraf-Nonius diffractometer. Complete crystal structures were determined for all compounds.
