Abstract

The ThMn(12) structure has been known for a long time to exist in many actinide and lanthanide binary compounds. Although a good candidate for hard magnetic materials, due to possible high magnetic crystalline anisotropy, none of the f-metal binary intermetallic compounds with Fe or Co is known to crystallise in this structure. Recent work showed that the partial addition of a third element can stabilise this structure and interesting magnetic properties were reported in polycrystalline samples. Here the preliminary results of a crystal chemistry study of iron-actinide compounds with ThMn(12)-type structure (namely UFe(12-x)Al(x), UFe(12-x)Si(x), UFe(12-x)Zn(x) and UFe(12-x)Mn(x)) are reported, in relation to the preparation of single crystals.
