Abstract

Wideband backscattering measurements have been undertaken on homogeneous dielectric cylinders by using a vector network analyser based system. Measured data compares well in amplitude and phase with the results of an analytical model based on the Van de Hulst approach. The same model is used here to investigate the influence of the dielectric constant on the backscattering response. The representation of the simulated data in time domain allows the identification of different scattering features. A simple explanation in terms of reflections on the air/dielectric interfaces can be given for some of these features but in other cases more complex scattering mechanisms must be considered.
