In 1991 the existing data in the H-mode confinement database DB.1 were improved and new data were added. Improvements to the old data included better estimates of the fast ion energy content and diamagnetic estimates for PDX. Moreover, whereas DB.1 contained only NBI heated H-mode data, DB.2 also includes electron cyclotron resonance heating (DIII-D), ion cyclotron resonance heating (JET) and combined NBI and ICRH (JET). Other additions include: (i) ELM-free H-modes obtained with boronisation (ASDEX); (ii) H-mode data from double null X-points, carbonisation, toroidal field scan, low q scan and the hot ion regime (DIII-D); (iii) H-mode data obtained with Be, pellets, helium injection, the hot ion regime and the ion del B-drift direction away from the active X-point (JET); (iv) ELMy H-mode data obtained by applying an ergodic magnetic field (JFT-2M). For each tokamak the improvements and additions are described, and the range of the parameters usually used in confinement analysis, according to type of ELMs and auxiliary heating are given. The scaling of the energy confinement time is discussed and the achievements of the H-mode database group are summarised.
