Agrometeorological aspects of crops in Italy, Spain and Greece : A summary review for common and durum wheat, barley, maize, rice, sugar beet, sunflower, soya bean, rape, potato, tobacco, cotton, olive and grape cropsFunded under: JRC-REMSENS 4C
Precise and up-to-date information on agricultural production is a vital component in running market economies. To obtain rapid information, the EC Commission set up a pilot project to introduce remote sensing into the European Community agricultural statistics system. Its results will form part of the Advanced Agricultural Information System. This system will depend mainly on remote sensing data from high and low resolution captors but also on methods of interpretation such as agrometeorological models. Part of the activities of the pilot project relate to the development of agrometeorological models for regional crop state monitoring and for quantitative yield predictions on a national scale. The present review provides a research and expert-knowledge based inventory of the information that is available for the main crops of Italy, Spain and Greece. The information presented refers to the following four major fields of interest: (i) the physiological and environmental crop growing conditions; (ii) the agricultural practices requirements; (iii) the main hazards that can affect crop production; (iv) a selection of general agronomic information, and regional and national production statistics.
