Building on the results of earlier R&D projects, the aim was to develop enhanced measurement equipment (IMU2) for routine track measurements, providing more reliable data whilst reducing the effort of measurement and analysis. It was necessary to develop the following system components: (i) inertial measurement device; (ii) two scanning devices; (iii) digital storage of measurement data; (iv) voltage adapter and battery; (v) data analysis software for the mobile analysis computer. Three test measurements using the IMU2 system established the effectiveness of the system for the inspection of guide rail installations. The measurements were reliable in comparison to those obtained using the existing mechanical measuring system. The IMU2 system is a prototype; more numerous test measurements need to be obtained before it can be declared fully operational. The question of firedamp protection has still to be resolved.
