Abstract

To solve the many three-dimensional problems arising in hard-coal mining, all the available geological information needs to be interpreted. Manual strata correlation is often very time-consuming; petrographic data are sometimes incomplete and can be classified in different ways. In this research project the aim was to establish to what extent methods of artificial intelligence, especially those of expert systems, can be applied to the problem of computer-aided strata correlation. The first question addressed in the study was whether and to what extent existing processes can be applied. A prototype, the SCHIKORRE system, was developed, which is currently capable of achieving time savings when carrying out correlations of low to moderate complexity. This prototype has not yet been fully tested in operation and should be developed further on a practical basis using a more powerful workstation.
