Most modern industrial communications networks are now structured according to the ISO-OSI layer model (DIN ISO 7498). The guidelines of the MAP (which translates as Manufacturing Information Protocol) project have virtually become an international standard. It is planned to introduce the ISU integrated control and monitoring system, also based on the layer model, in hard coal mining, incorporating standard industrial components wherever possible. Because data communications systems hitherto employed in mines do not match the requirements of a wider standardised communication network, new developments had to be set in train. The purpose of this research project was to develop a field bus system in accordance with ISO 7498 suitable for use underground. Fundamental study of bit transmission as well as protocols and access routines for data transmission, with mining applications in mind, led to a decision in favour of PROFIBUS, in accordance with DIN 19 245. Field bus components developed so far are still equipped with the original type of bus coupler. Once the standard bus coupler has been completed in Part B of the project, the components will be approved to European Standards EN 50 014 to EN 50 020.
