Abstract

A model comparing various reprocessing scenarios and direct disposal scenarios has been created using the CODDAR computer code. The model has been used to rank the scenarios and establish the most and least favourable disposal routes when judged against four different sets of criteria, chosen to reflect different concerns for: (i) cost; (ii) the environment, including long-term impact; (iii) local impact; (iv) general shorter-term radiological impact. This has been achieved by applying different sets of weighting factors, each chosen to reflect one of the four concerns, to the absolute impacts associated with different attributes (cost, risk and dose - to different groups and for various processes) and summing these impacts to obtain a total impact. In this report the performance and development potentials of CODDAR are considered, demonstrating that its usability requires improvement and its functionability needs to be changed.
