This book arises out of a symposium on forest and woodland terrestrial ecosystems, held in Florence in May 1991. The plenary sessions provided six major state of the art reviews covering: (i) ecosystem as a working concept; (ii) an environmental framework for ecosystem development; (iii) community patterns and dynamics; (iv) processes in ecosystems; (v) input-output analysis; (vi) forest in a changing environment. The second part of the book includes presentations by invited groups on the findings at local level; these papers are grouped according to their geographic distribution. The final part is a synthesis of the main issues which were raised by the rapporteurs.
