Collection of raw data in ASDEX-Upgrade is divided into individual diagnostic procedures, whose data are stored in shot files. The basic elements of shot files are presented, also from the perspective of the diagnostician. The process of data acquisition is described, explaining the formation of a shot file step by step. The synchronisation of an analysis program with a data acquisition program is explained, as are the data links between workstations and the central computer. The way in which an analysis program controls and monitors data acquisition is described, and the steps identified that must be taken when setting up a new diagnostic, as well as the rules for constructing the shot file header to describe the diagnostic. As an example, the UV diagnostic for the experiment leader is presented, together with the hardware structure used in ASDEX and ASDEX-Upgrade and its analysis program specially written for the purpose. The procedure for integrating new data acquisition hardware into the system is described, and the structure of routines to serve the relevant hardware. Finally, the functions of routines implemented so far are documented.
