Abstract

A regime of very high confinement (VH-mode) ions was observed in the boronised DIII-D tokamak, during which the confinement was seen to exceed 3.5 times that of the ITER89-P L-mode scaling relation. In this ELM-free phase, confinement was seen to increase with time, and was terminated by a global MHD event which was associated with high beta. Low radiated power, Z(eff), and a low fast-ion fraction are amongst the characteristics of VH-mode discussed in this paper.
