Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The need for the improvement of the quality of results in monitoring of water systems has led the BCR of the Commission of the European Communities to produce a series of certified reference materials (CRMs) which are listed below: (i) freshwater samples certified for their content of major elements (Al, Ca, Cl, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P and S), respectively CRMs 398 (low element content) and 399 (high element content); (ii) seawater certified for its content of trace elements (Cd, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn), CRM 403; (iii) rainwater samples certified for their major element content (Ca, Cl, H(3)O, K, Mg, Na, NH(4), NO(3) and SO(4)), respectively CRMs 408 (low element content) and 409 (high element content). This contribution describes the certification work and presents the on-going projects on water analyses (trace elements in estuarine water, nitrate in freshwater).
