Abstract

Fishing, one of man's oldest occupations, is an economic sector which has continued to grow in importance in the European Community, especially since the accession of Spain and Portugal. The fishing industry possesses such a richness and diversity of technical vocabulary that confusion frequently results, and politicians, specialists and decision-makers, as well as translators and interpreters, find themselves confronted with difficulties arising from the lack of a reliable, standardised terminology. Whether it be fixing catch quotas, agreeing on permitted fishing techniques or establishing measures for the conservation of fish stocks, it is essential to speak a common language. For this reason glossaries of specialised terminology covering various aspects of the fishing industry were compiled, with this publication concentrating on fishing vessels and safety on board in particular.
