During the years 1989, 1990 and 1991, a test in the S-9 and S-11 faces of ENDESA's Innominada mine in Andorra, the province of Teruel, Spain was carried out by applying a highly mechanised integral sutirage system along the roof. The main objectives to be achieved were an increase in the productivity of the panel and an improvement in the working conditions and mine safety. The special geological characteristics of the roof and floor fields and of the coal itself (sub-bituminous coal) as well as the previous experiences of mechanisation gave rise to the need to design a method and support adapted to this deposit. Basically, the new shields which have been tested are different from the ones used at present in the mechanised exploitations of the longwall with sutirage. The difference lies in their configuration as well as in the way of extracting the coal which, in this case, is directly along the roof.
