Technological innovation in the plastics industry and its influence on the environmental problems of plastic wasteFunded under: FP2-MONITOR, FP2-SAST
The background of the project to which this report contributes is the increasing volume, variety and technical sophistication of plastics materials manufactured and used in the European Community which raise the need to overcome the environmental problem of plastics waste. The project encompasses therefore the whole range of implications of technological and institutional changes as well as socio-economic factors on the plastics and related industries and identifies the means to encourage innovation in an overall life-cycle perspective aimed at promoting plastic waste minimisation and prevention. This report gives an overview of the most recent developments of environmental assessment methods and raises issues concerning future developments and strategies. It reflects knowledge obtained through a small number of interviews with European industrialists, researchers and policy makers.
