Research and technology strategy to help overcome the environmental problems in relation to transportFunded under: FP2-MONITOR, FP2-SAST
The background of the project to which this report contributes is a recognition of the growing impact of transportation on the environment, both as a function of growth in trade and as a leisure activity. The project is directed towards the elucidation of the many interactions between technology, transport and environment, in order to provide the Commission with: (i) recommendations on the priorities for Community research and development in transport technology and other related areas of technology; (ii) an understanding of the implications of technological change on policy options within the Community with regard to transport and environment and other related areas, such as energy and regional planning. The project is structured around four individual studies, each of which addresses a specific set of environmental issues and considers particular clusters of transport technologies. This report considers quality of life impacts, that is, impacts relating primarily to the urban environment encompassing noise, congestion, safety and constraints imposed by transport structures on living conditions.
