The most successful fusion device in the world is operated by the Community Fusion Programme: JET, the Joint European Torus (Joint Undertaking). Recently, fusion power in the megawatt range has been achieved on this device. This paper reviews the current status of fusion research in the context of the global demand for energy. The Community Fusion Programme is described and the future prospects are discussed.
