In support to the Statistical Office (EUROSTAT) and to the Directorate General for Agriculture of the EC, a system is being developed for the timely forecasting of the production of twelve of the EC's most important crops: wheat, barley, grain maize, rice, sugar beet, potato, oilseed rape, sunflower, soya-bean, cotton, wine grape and olive. The system as a whole is expected to become operational in the course of 1993. In this paper, an overview is given of the general approach followed for crop yield forecasting, as well as of the various specific problems that arise when validating crop growth simulation models for applications on a regional scale. The possible use of satellite information to improve the yield predictions both in space and time are also briefly discussed.
