Abstract

The implementation of the Seveso Directive promoted a wide public debate on industrial hazards which has itself increased the awareness of risk among operators and authorities. This paper presents a partial survey, as derived from sectoral studies, on risk communication and emergency planning using material available from member countries and from some direct contacts within selected national and local authorities. Initially the paper summarises the major findings of Commission-funded research; then it gives some insights into the state of implementation of the Directive in the member countries; finally it suggests proposals for future common actions.
